Choose your character and gamify your style

Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!

Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇

1 Quest for you to try

This week, you are embracing the gamer within by creating an outfit inspired by your favorite video game! It’s National Video Game Day on September 12th, so in addition to gaming with some friends or doing a solo run, why not celebrate by dressing as your favorite character or give a playful nod to a nostalgic game from childhood?

How to participate

  1. Choose: Decide the video game, your character, and the “mode” you’ll be using to create your outfit.
  2. Create: Put together a look inspired by this character/game.
  3. Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry.

The most inspiring outfit will be featured next week! Please let me know if you would like to remain anonymous.

2 Tips to help you slay

For this week’s quest, I challenge you to use one of these three modes:

  • Easy mode: Check what is in your closet first, then think of the character you want to create based on what you have available.
  • Hard mode: Choose your character, then recreate their outfit or a variation of it using only what’s in your closet.
  • Shopping mode: Choose your character, and shop for specific items to recreate their outfit as similarly as possible!

My own example of this quest is the outfit I put together inspired by Lara Croft in the game, Tomb Raider, from 2013. This outfit was a combination of Hard Mode and Shopping mode!

I already had some items like props, a wig, and shoes. I did however purchase new pants and two tank tops at the thrift store, then did some DIY to make them more “adventure” worn (AKA – rolled them in the dirt and coffee grinds, stained them with tea, burned them, and ripped them…it was pretty therapeutic TBH). I even tried something new by crafting the necklace based on Lara’s pendant in the game with model clay!

This is a great opportunity to test out costume ideas while you’re at it- Halloween is next month after all!

Our style suggestions

  1. Use what you have – check out inspiration online and take a look through your closet to see which pieces you already have on hand similar to your chosen character. Want to make a Mario-inspired look? If you have blue overalls and a red shirt, you’re already pretty close, or even a blue jumpsuit could work! It doesn’t have to be exact unless you’re looking to try hard mode (or shopping mode) with this challenge!
  2. Switch it up – inspired by the cosplay community, another option if you are having a hard time recreating a character’s look is to try a “crossplay” or genderswapping the character and their outfit to help it fit your own style better! I once dressed as Brock from Pokemon but created an outfit for how I think he’d dress if more femininized. In fact, our entire group did this, so we had a male Misty, a female Ash, and a female Pikachu in addition to my female version of Brock.
