Dos and Don’ts of wedding guest style

Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!

Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇

1 Quest for you to try

It’s event season! Between graduation parties, summer gatherings, and weddings, it can be a whirlwind of get-togethers. But it should also be a time to spend with loved ones and friends, and the last thing you want to worry about is what to wear or what exactly that wedding dress code means. Since I attended a wedding out of state this week, I thought I’d share some of my own tips and tricks as a guest, and some helpful dos and don’ts for your next wedding! Your style quest, should you choose to accept, is prep for that upcoming wedding BEFORE the day before!

How to participate

  1. Choose: Start thinking about an upcoming wedding that you want to feel fabulous for!
  2. Create: Combine our tips, tricks, and dress code reminders to put together a wedding guest outfit that fits both the dress code details and your own function and fashion criteria well in advance so you know exactly what you’re wearing, and how it fits!
  3. Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry (bonus points if it’s an action shot on the dance floor!).

The most inspiring outfit will be featured next week! Please let me know if you would like to remain anonymous.

2 Tips to help you slay

This past week, I had the opportunity to attend a wedding on the West Coast for a close friend (and fellow stylist)! For her wedding specifically, she wanted guests to embrace color, so I opted for an elegant printed sleeveless dress that I thrifted and wore to a special dinner for my conference a few weeks ago – for the wedding, since it was in the evening, I elevated the look with gold jewelry, a pair of metallic heels, then switched into colorful flats when it was time to dance…and eventually navy blue sneakers when I really wanted to bust a move in comfort!

— Here are some quick reminders for typical wedding dress codes:

Casual: Think daytime weddings – can be understated but still polished — sundresses, light trousers, or coordinated sets. Footwear can be playful or practical depending on how you like to express yourself!

Cocktail: Mid-length dresses, jumpsuits, or sleek separates. Opt for luxe fabrics like satin, silk, or velvet for evening weddings – think a balance of elegance with a touch of comfort.

Formal / Black Tie Optional: Gowns or tailored suits are recommended here – time to lean into those lavish vibes! Accessories and statement pieces can elevate your look in a big way, or some sleek shoes can also be a great statement piece.

Our style suggestions

  1. The Do’s:
    • Do pay attention to any specific requests – for example, for my friend’s wedding, which inspired this post, they requested no white or black, but please DO wear colors!
    • Do be mindful of details such as afternoon vs evening weddings (which can effect dress code), indoor or outdoor venues for footwear (think heel covers if wearing high heels on grass or just go for a block heel, wedge, or flats), and temperature if you’ll need to dress in or bring a heavier layer for cooler events or sunglasses/a nice hat to shade yourself during warmer events.
  2. The Don’ts:
    • Don’t wear white unless the happy couple requests it. If you question the color (say it’s a light shade of neutral, gray, pink, silver, or gold that could look like any shade of white in certain lights), just avoid it altogether.
    • Don’t break the bank or take up prime real estate in your closet – borrow, trade, thrift, or rent event wear if it’s not something you’ll use often.

The Mr.

Our Mr inspired look was created for a "Cocktail" wedding dress code. A full suit, vest included, makes for a polished visual, and adding a printed navy short sleeve for a pop of color adds that touch of casual without being informal, should you remove the blazer. Brown belt complements copper shoes with a unique shape, and a blue and gold watch accents a pair of gold collar pins in place of a tie at the neckline.

The Mx.

Our Mx inspired look was created for a "Casual" wedding dress code - the matching suit set creates a put-together look, and layering a sheer floral blouse beneath with complementary floral print loafers gives garden party vibes, heavy on the party if you go without the jacket! Simple jewelry like a gold bangle and geometric ring adds some mixed metals to pair with the metal detail on the shoes, and a green belt ties the green accents of the shoe and blouse together.

The Ms.

Our Ms inspired look was created for a "Formal" wedding dress code. Leaning into elegance and refinement, our main color comes in with a textured plum gown, paired with a plum shawl for cooler weather. Accents of gold and pearl create warmth on the skin, and simple accessories like a thin pearl and gold ring, simple pearl drop earrings, a gold and pearl watch, and a gold detail body chain in place of a necklace, create interest without overwhelm. Finally, a textured heel and purse, both in gold, add just enough of a statement without taking away from the elevated appeal of the entire ensemble!
