Find costume inspiration from your closet

Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!

Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇

1 Quest for you to try

This week, you are skipping the costume store and attending that last-minute Halloween party with a creation from your own closet! It’s time to find even more closet inspiration in your wardrobe, but this week, we’ll be creating costumes!

How to participate

  1. Choose: Take a look in your closet to start and see what stands out or what you feel inspired to create!
  2. Create: Check out Pinterest or do a Google search for “easy costume” or “closet costume” if you need some additional prompts to help you put together a full outfit using what you already have
  3. Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry.

The most inspiring outfit will be featured next week! Please let me know if you would like to remain anonymous.

2 Tips to help you slay

For this week’s quest, I’ve chosen a fitted off-the-shoulder black dress with white detailing, paired with heels, a vintage pillbox hat, spider earrings, and a tissue as my accessory to become a “Black Widow” (get it? spiders…mourning wife…you get) as my easy to put together, but still creative closet costume!

Or your look could be as simple as using a bandana to create a classic character like Rosie the Riveter, or return to your childhood costumes and dress as a cowboy! Have fun with it and remember, the scariest thing you’ll have to deal with is actually talking to people at the party – I know nothing more terrifying.

Our style suggestions

  1. If you don’t have character-specific clothing or costume pieces take creative liberties and put your own spin on it! For example, don’t own a chambray shirt for a Rosie the Riveter costume? Wear a jean jacket instead!
  2. Rather than buy something new, borrow items! Whether it’s specific items for a character you do want to create, or you have a theme like “an 80s rockstar”, you can ask a friend or family member if you can use items they own (bonus points if they end up having vintage pieces from that decade too!) and save money while staying creative with your costume!
