Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!
Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇
1 Quest for you to try
This week, I want you to embrace every curious kid’s favorite game: treasure hunting! Winter fashion doesn’t have to mean spending big bucks, and thrifting can be a treasure hunt of its own! Instead of buried treasure (or like, cool rocks), you’ll be hunting for unique, budget-friendly pieces that keep you warm and stylish, while also embracing sustainability. Let’s dive into how to make the most of your thrift store adventures and your style challenge this week, “Thrift stylish winter wear”!
How to participate
- Choose: Find a favorite (or new favorite) thrift store to scope out and add one new winter item to your wardrobe (a sweater, a scarf, a coat, or even some new winter boots!)
- Create: Combine your new piece with some cold-weather wearables already in your closet for a new-to-you outfit
- Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry.
The most inspiring outfit will be featured next week! Please let me know if you would like to remain anonymous.
2 Tips to help you slay
For this week’s quest, I chose a few new-to-me pieces to create some outfits with after a winter treasure hunt at the well-known thrift store “The Garment District” in Cambridge MA. I was specifically looking for layerable items with prints or colors to add more pop to my own winter wear!
— Items I recommend checking out when it comes to budget-friendly winter clothing are items such as winter coats, winter boots, and wool sweaters as those are very useful and can be more expensive when bought new. Check the condition of all items before purchase or if you’re open to upcycling/repairing pieces, keep the following suggestions in mind:
Our style suggestions
- When purchasing thrifted boots ensure the soles and heels are intact or see if they can be repaired by your local cobbler if the quality of the rest of the shoe is well made and still in good condition. Also, check the laces if applicable to see if they’ll need to be replaced, and make sure any zippers are fully functional.
- For sweaters and items made of wool check for holes (moths love snacking on sweaters), and double-check the fit – many folks don’t know how to properly launder wool items so the pieces will shrink and end up becoming a boxier fit. If it’s a little short, you could style it as a cropped sweater, or even upcycle by adding more material to make it the length you want (great opportunity to try out colorblocking too)!
