Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!
Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇
1 Quest for you to try
Ahoy, matey! This week’s challenge, should ye dare to accept, be to set sail for yer closet and unearth a treasure trove of an outfit for a swashbuckling, pirate-inspired look!
Did you know that “International Talk Like A Pirate Day” (which happens on September 19th) is featured in the game, Sims 4? Yep, it’s such an important holiday for us nerds that we even celebrate it within gaming universes (how meta)! That’s why this week if you’re already planning to talk like a pirate, why not lean into looking like one as well?!
How to participate
- Choose: Select your inspiration, be it from a movie, book, or even a long-lost photo of a childhood costume to help you get started!
- Create: Practice your favorite pirate phrases while putting together your treasure of a look! Even small accent pieces count with this challenge (Bonus points for really random trinkets)!
- Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry.
The most inspiring outfit will be featured next week! Please let me know if you would like to remain anonymous.
2 Tips to help you slay
For this week’s quest, I recommend pulling inspiration from YOUR favorite Pirate movie! Some of my favorite Pirate movies growing up were the Pirate of the Caribbean series (well, at least the 1st-3rd, after those I lost track)! Other options you could check out include Peter Pan, The Pirates of Penzance, Hook, Treasure Planet, Sinbad, One Piece, and of course a true classic, Muppet Treasure Island!
— I chose two movies to inspire my looks: Treasure Planet, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. I loved Treasure Planet for its unique resetting of the classic Treasure Island as a steampunk, sci-fi-inspired movie, which made for some cool characters, and outfit ideas! Pirates seem to love trinkets anyway, so some steampunk accessories paired with more traditional “pirate” attire could be a fun approach to take with this challenge!
Our style suggestions
- Materials matter when it comes to crafting a pirate look! For a pirate captain, showing off their booty (not that booty!) and riches was important, so lavish items like silks, brocades, and damaks were worn when they came ashore. Whereas while sailing, wool and canvas were the preferred attire for functional purposes.
- Interesting layers and accessories are highly encouraged! Random trinkets or beads can be used as jewelry, worn in your hair, or tied in as an accent for your hat or belt as a fun way to embrace your “backstory” (or just enjoy the shiny things) and inspire tales of your sea-worthy adventures…yar!
