Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!
Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇
1 Quest for you to try
This week, you are embracing the holiday spirit, and by that I mean, lean into your crafting skills, and let’s have some cosplay fun! We’re kicking December off with some creative inspiration for those themed holiday parties you have coming up. Forget Father Christmas, what about Mother Christmas? And why decorate the tree when you can BE the tree? This week’s challenge: “Slay the Holidays, Spirit Week Style”!
How to participate
- Choose: Decide what your holiday-inspired costume will be – you can go traditional and choose one that already exists, like Mrs. Clause, the Grinch, or Ebenezer Scrooge, or get creative and come up with your own take on it (like I said, Mother Christmas anyone?!)!
- Create: Get crafty and use items you already own, or thrift for some key pieces to create your festive fashion and spirited styling
- Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry.
The most inspiring outfit will be featured next week! Please let me know if you would like to remain anonymous.
2 Tips to help you slay
For this week’s quest, I’ve chosen to create two looks! My first, a more classic inspiration, Mother Christmas (as opposed to Father Christmas – I didn’t have a good beard for the look). This was a look I created from items I already owned, including my wedding dress! For fellow wedding dress owners, this is a great holiday costume if you want to get more use out of that white gown!
— My second look is a more fashion-forward look with my own take on a “tree dress”! Inspired by a Christmas tree dress I crafted years ago, this updated version had new stipulations, such as being able to get in and out of it without contortionist skills and being able to sit down in it (a minor inconvenience the first time). This was a more involved crafting experience from both a creative standpoint and a financial standpoint, including needing to purchase some new crafting supplies such as a large stainless steel pot and multiple rounds of dye. Still, I loved creating something new from unused items and a little extra flair from the holiday section of Michaels! You don’t have to go quite this hard (each of the 4 dyeing sessions took over an hour of stirring at boiling temperature), but don’t be afraid to let your inspiration lead either. You never know what fun fashion you’ll come up with, or what you’ll learn in the process (like buying the base items might be less expensive than trying to dye them the exact color yourself if it’s a drastic color change)!
Our style suggestions
- Don’t be afraid to upcycle old items or use them in unconventional ways for this challenge! I used my wedding dress for the Mother Christmas costume and when paired with a velvet cloak from my Little Red Riding Hood costume, it created the exact look I was going for! No purchases or massive modifications were necessary for this look!
- Try your hand at dyeing clothing to create the holiday color scheme you need! I didn’t already own a green dress for my Christmas Tree look, but I did own a yellow skirt and white sweater – a few containers of dye and many hours of stirring later, I had the base for my festive outfit!
