Spring to summer style shifts

Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!

Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇

1 Quest for you to try

As we celebrate the upcoming summer equinox and the change of temperatures, it’s also time to change up our wardrobes! But remember, this doesn’t mean you should take your swimwear, shorts, and sandals out and put everything else away! Layering is key for comfort, whether you have cool evenings and want to keep a jean jacket or light sweatshirt on hand, or you work in a heavily air-conditioned office and need to carry an “office cardigan” (or equivalent) in your bag. Your quest this week: “Shift your spring wardrobe to summer styling.”

How to participate

  1. Choose: Select one warm-weather piece you’ve been waiting to wear this season, such as a sundress, linen pants or shorts, a cool sleeveless top, lightweight summer footwear, or any summer item that’s been hiding in your closet and you’re interested in experimenting with!
  2. Create: Build an outfit using that piece as the main focus, and use at least one transitional layer and one season-shift accessory to complete it. For example: linen trousers + tank + jean jacket, or Sundress + cardigan + mesh slip-ons, or shorts + tee + chambray button-down. Bonus points if your outfit can comfortably take you from a warm afternoon to a cool evening without a complete wardrobe change!
  3. Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry.

2 Tips to help you slay

As I write this newsletter, knowing summer is technically just a couple of weeks away, it’s a chilly 50-degree farenhight, rainy morning in New England, which is not uncommon for the area in June. Integrating those warm-weather layers, like sleeveless shirts, sundresses, and shorts, will be necessary in no time at all, but for the occasional cool and rainy day (or 2-3) like today, you’ll still want something cozy you can throw on! My go-tos are a lightweight jean jacket, knit hoodie, or asymmetrical cardigan/shrug that can be easily added to any summer outfit without taking away from the look!

— For folks who can feel and see the difference on the thermometer between spring and summer seasons where they live, here are some tips to keep you cool and comfy on days filled with sunshine, followed by slightly cooler evenings:

Our style suggestions

  1. Linen layers: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, materials matter! When the weather gets warm, linen is a material that can help keep you cool while still feeling fashionable. You’ll find linen button-downs and shorts aplenty this time of year under casual or resort wear categories. But there are also some great dress pants, dresses, and stylish tops made from this natural fiber. I personally love a good pair of high-waist, wide-leg linen trousers paired with a tank top and blazer or jean jacket for a look that can go from the office to dinner on the patio with friends. Just be mindful that it can wrinkle easily, so a linen blend can work better for more professional/formal situations.
  2. Functionally fabulous footwear: Much like our layers, footwear is another wardrobe item that can be good to transition with the change of season. If it’s too warm for boots, or you find yourself overheating in those snazzy leather sneakers, opt for lighter-weight shoe options in materials that breathe or have “ventilation” in their style. Woven loafers, lightweight mesh sneakers, canvas slip-ons, or even peep-toe wedges or heels can help with airflow while still creating a cohesive outfit that fits your style needs!

The Ms.

Our Ms flatlay, as we shift from spring to summer style, focuses on a deep red cotton dress as the staple piece. Adding a white cropped denim jacket for cooler evenings adds an extra layer but also gives it a more casual vibe for hanging out (it can be swapped for a cropped cardigan if you want to elevate the look!). We've paired this red and white color palette with red peep-toe heels and garnet and pearl accent jewelry. An additional pop of color and fun comes from a gold and red watch and a pair of red-framed sunglasses for just a touch of a retro vibe!
