Styling your inner matriarch

Hey, Style Slayers — Happy Moda Monday!

Welcome Inside the Closet! In this edition, we’re sharing 1 quest, 2 tips, and 3 looks to help you embrace your unique style superpowers — Let’s step in! 👇

1 Quest for you to try

This week, we’re getting inspired by the matriarch! Mother’s Day is about celebrating mothers, mother figures, and anyone who embodies “mom energy” —but let’s be real: not all “moms” fit the traditional mold. Some of us are pet moms (present!), plant parents, or even the go-to emotional support person in our friend group (hi, yes, that’s also me). Others may channel their inner matriarch through bold leadership, unwavering loyalty, or fiercely protective vibes for the people and causes they care about.

Your challenge this week is to build a “Matriarch Core” outfit that celebrates your unique strengths! You could even base it on one of the following archetypes: The Regal Queen, The Cozy Caretaker, The Punk Protector, The Chaotic Good Guardian. Or mix them together to create something uniquely you. These “Archetypes of Mother Energy”  can even help you choose your style path this week!

For example, inspiration for the Regal Queen might be Galadriel from The Lord of the Rings or Regina from Once Upon a Time. Their style vibes can be described as ethereal, dramatic, and dripping with contrast of sharp elegance. Think flowing fabrics, statement jewelry, and an air of mystery. Your signature look might include items like a cape, long coats, structured corsets, high-neck gowns or blouses, and gold or silver embellishments.

An example of the Cozy Caretaker might look like Miss Honey from Matilda or any of the Studio Ghibli Moms (I especially love Lisa from Ponyo). These style vibes are warm, inviting, and a little whimsical. Think crocheted, cozy knits, and an apron or skirt with large pockets full of snacks. Your signature look could include oversized sweaters, vintage floral dresses, cute overalls, and cardigans with deep pockets (pockets are a common theme for this matriarch!) that make you feel huggable and homey.

Maybe you fall under a more untraditional mother role and prefer to be the Punk Protector like Sarah Connor from the Terminator, or Leia Organa from Star Wars. Style Vibes for this archetype can be described as tough, badass, and effortlessly cool. Think leather, tactical gear, combat boots, and an attitude that says “I dare you”. Your signature look could include a leather jacket or vest, fingerless gloves, and simple accessories that are functional and fashionable, like sunglasses or a utility belt.

Or last but of course not least, maybe you feel more like the Chaotic Good Guardian. Think of the energy of Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls, or that one Aunt who always has wild stories. These style vibes lean toward fun, eclectic, and certainly never boring. Pattern mixing, funky accessories, and a touch of mischief allow them to showcase their bold personalities. Your signature look could include a mix of bold prints, statement earrings, novelty T-shirts, and quirky accessories.

How to participate

  1. Choose: Pick a foundation piece that makes you feel powerful (a dramatic cape? A worn-in leather jacket? A cozy cardigan?)
  2. Create: Add details that define your “matriarchal role”—accessories, textures, or colors that make a statement. Or choose a “power item” that ties the look together—something that feels like your symbol of leadership.
  3. Capture: Share your outfit with #VostraModaQuest, or reply to this email with your entry.

2 Tips to help you slay

For this week’s quest, I’ve chosen to embrace a mix of all these archetype examples. As someone who loves combining the structure of a Regal Queen with the welcoming warmth of the Cozy Caretaker while also embracing the Punk Protector and Chaotic Good Guardian with observant and creative vibes, it’s a reminder that we are all multifaceted!

— Your look could simply utilize an item passed down to you from a mother-figure in your own life; a piece of jewelry, or perhaps a vintage article of clothing. Incorporate the item into your own style to continue the legacy of meaningful matriarchy.

Our style suggestions

  1. Layer Power & Softness: Matriarch energy is complex—it holds boundaries while also giving hugs. Try pairing structured elements (like a blazer, boots, or corset belt) with soft textures (silk, jersey, faux fur) to embody both strength and nurturance.
  2. Footwear is your foundation: Are you a stomper, a slipper-shuffler, or a graceful stepper? Your shoes should set the tone—combat boots say “protector,” fuzzy slides whisper “comfort,” while heels or loafers declare “command.” Why not build your style from the ground up?
